Upcoming Workshops

Encaustic Monotypes Workshop | Saturday, October 25
Description
Create a one-of-a-kind print with hot wax!
This workshop is for artists at every level who want to learn about ways to incorporate encaustic into their artwork, or have worked with encaustic before and want to have a deeper exposure to a specific technique.
What is an encaustic monotype print? It involves using encaustic paint directly on a heated surface, laying paper over the melted paint and burnishing it, thereby making a print. These prints can achieve unexpected results, bringing a spontaneity to your work.
Demonstrations are combined with ample time for independent work, and with one-on-one assistance, giving you a chance to explore some of the materials and tools of this versatile medium.
The agenda for the day will include:
- An informal gathering at the beginning for art conversation over coffee and pastries, talking about monotypes and looking at some examples.
- A brief review of the encaustic process and safety
- Demo of the printing process and discussion of papers and tools
- Possible ways to present these works
The equipment, supplies, and many materials including several different papers will be provided (a packet of a dozen or so papers). However, you should also bring in some additional papers with which to work. If you are new to printing, I suggest trying thinner printing papers like Rives Lightweight or Japanese papers, in light or neutral colors.
This workshop is not offered very often and fills quickly, so grab this opportunity while you can. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $175 until October 10 or $195 for later registrations.

Encaustic and Collage Workshop at GPAA | Saturday, Sept. 27
Description
We can thank Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso for introducing collage in the early 1900s.
In this class we’ll follow their lead on collage, but add encaustic (hot wax) that can be used both as an adhesive and as a paint.
We will review the basics of encaustic:
- priming
- applying and fusing the wax
- and safety.
If you are new to the medium, this is an opportunity to learn more about painting with hot wax. For the more advanced, this is an opportunity to push your creative process.
Demonstrations will be combined with one-on-one time with the instructor and individual work time so you can learn additional ways to incorporate encaustic into your own artistic projects.
All equipment, paints, and most materials are supplied by the instructor. Wood panels (sizes 6” x 6” to 8” x 10”) will be provided for painting; a selection of papers and items for collaging or embedding will be also available. Participants are welcome to bring along any additional personal items they might like to work with, such as small drawings, decorative papers, or other ephemera. Please wear studio clothes with long sleeves, and bring a bag lunch or snack for a midday break.
The cost is just $90 for GPAA members and $110 for non-GPAA members. Space is limited, so don’t wait—sign up today!

Found Objects With Encaustic | Friday, August 22
Description
objet trouvé | Found object art is created from undisguised, but often modified, items or products that are not normally considered materials from which art is made, often because they already have a non-art function.
Join visual artist Candace Law on Friday, August 22 from 10 am to 4 pm for a fun one-day workshop exploring how to use found objects with encaustic to enhance your work in new and unexpected ways.
We’ll review some basic tools and simple mechanical ways to attach different items to flat wood panels. Then we’ll work through a couple of small projects as we incorporate found objects into our work. As always, you’ll have ample time for independent work with one-on-one assistance. No experience is needed for this workshop, and newcomers to encaustic are welcome.
The equipment, supplies, and some materials needed for this class are provided. However, you will want to bring a few of your own found objects, various small items, papers to collage or ephemera to incorporate into your artwork.
This workshop is not offered very often and space is limited, so grab this opportunity while you can. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $145 until August 15 or $175 for later registrations.

Transfers on Encaustic Workshop | Friday, May 23
Description
Did you know there are different ways to transfer marks and images onto an encaustic surface? Would you like to learn more about how to do it?
Transfers can apply to mark-making, using some type of transfer paper to recreate lines and marks; to photo images, pulling the image off the paper and putting it onto another surface; it can even be about using stamps to make print images onto a surface.
Join visual artist Candace Law in the studio on Friday, May 23 from 10 am to 4 pm, and spend a fun day getting creative with both photocopies and mark-making tools, while painting with pigmented hot wax. The equipment and many supplies will be provided, but this is also a chance to work with some of your own drawings and photos to incorporate them into a painting.
We’ll discuss toner copies, transferring versus embedding, using transfer papers, and trying out stamps. Just bring a willingness to experiment. There will be some demonstrations as well as plenty of individual work time so you can try more than one technique. No experience is needed for this workshop, and newcomers to encaustic are welcome.
This is a great opportunity to just play and be creative while working with other local artists and exchanging ideas. Further details and suggested photos to bring in will be provided before the session.
Workshops have been filling fast and space is limited, so you won’t want to miss out. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $145 until May 16 or $175 for later registrations.

Mark-Making with Encaustic | Friday, March 14
Description
Join visual artist Candace Law in the studio on Friday, March 14 from 10 am to 4 pm to explore the many ways we can incorporate marks in our encaustic paintings.
One of my absolute favorite things to do on any piece I’m painting is to make marks of some kind. Artist Paul Klee once said “A line is a dot that went for a walk”. I’ve never met a line I didn’t like, and dots or scribbles are just as interesting, adding layers and greater depth to the surface of your artwork.
We’ll talk about some of the specific materials that pair well with wax. Ever tried drawing on wax or incising? This is your chance to spend a day experimenting and opening up your imagination. To add to the fun, we’ll pull out a selection of pigment sticks to enhance our marks or create subtle glazes. As always, there will be demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with me will fill out the day.
The equipment, materials and most supplies for the workshop are provided. Feel free to bring any materials (found objects, papers or other small items) you might like to incorporate into your artwork. You’ll be working with small to medium-sized panels (up to 9” x 12”) so you can complete at least one piece by the end of the day.
Workshops have been filling fast and space is limited, so you won’t want to miss out. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $145 until March 7 or $175 for later registrations.

This workshop is for artists who want to add to their creative voices by creating “marks” to express themselves. Whether you are new to encaustic or you’ve used hot wax before, this workshop is a great opportunity to learn from and work with one of Detroit’s best-known encaustic artists.
In the workshop, we will explore what kind of marks you would like to make and specifically how to incise or cut them into an encaustic surface. We will try a few different techniques, so you will be able to find the one that suits you.
All the supplies and materials are included, as well as an assortment of tools to use, as you experiment with the process.
The workshop agenda will include:
- Basics of encaustic painting, while working on a warmup panel
- Mark-making in art with a discussion of inscribing and inlays
- Demos, one-on-one time with the instructor and plenty of individual work time.
Artists new to encaustic are welcome, or you can use this session as a refresher. This is a great opportunity to meet and be inspired by other artists in our area.
All you have bring is an apron and a willingness to experiment; however, feel free to bring small items, such as decorative papers, found objects, or other ephemera that you would like to use to make your work more personal. Reference photos can be helpful.
You also might bring a bag lunch.
The cost is just $90 for GPAA members and $110 for non-GPAA members. Space is limited, so don’t wait—sign up today!
