Description
Welcome to summer! Let’s unwind and create one-of-a-kind prints with hot wax!
This workshop is for artists at every level who want to learn about ways to incorporate encaustic into their artwork, or have worked with encaustic before and want to have a deeper exposure to a specific technique.
What is an encaustic monotype print? It involves using encaustic paint directly on a heated surface, laying paper over the melted paint and burnishing it, thereby making a print. These prints can achieve unexpected results, bringing a spontaneity to your work.
Demonstrations are combined with ample time for independent work, and with one-on-one assistance, giving you a chance to explore some of the materials and tools of this versatile medium.
The agenda for the day will include:
- An informal gathering at the beginning for art conversation over coffee and pastries talking about monotypes and looking at some examples.
- A brief review of the encaustic process and safety
- Demo of the printing process and discussion of papers and tools
- Possible ways to present these works
The equipment, supplies, and many materials including several different papers will be provided (a packet of a dozen or so papers, approx. 10” x 12”). However, you should also bring in some additional papers with which to work. If you are new to printing, I suggest trying thinner printing papers (like Rives BFK lightweight), or Japanese (washi) papers in light or neutral colors.
