Encaustic Open Studio | Friday, November 15

Description

Wax on! Join visual artist Candace Law in the studio on Friday, November 15 from 10 am to 4 pm to work on your own projects with encaustic. As a bonus, she will be sharing some of the practical tips she has learned.

What It’s About…

The Open Studio gives you an opportunity for independent work, with an instructor available for questions and assistance. You should have some experience working with encaustic and want time on your own to work with the materials, tools, and techniques.

But if you are new to this wonderful medium, there is a place for you, too. The instructor can work alongside you and provide a hands-on experience in one or two techniques you might like to try.

What to Bring…

The equipment, as well as some supplies and materials, are provided. You may bring your own items and materials to incorporate into your artwork, as well as your own larger panels or unfinished pieces to work on. If you want to start a new project, smaller panels (up to 11×14) will be available.

Space is limited, so you won’t want to miss out—the cost is just $145.

How to Enroll

Click on the “Register” button above, then follow the instructions to enroll. At checkout, you will be able to pay securely online with a credit card or PayPal. Payment plans are also available from PayPal.

Call for Entry Workshop Series

Call for Entry Workshop Series

Description

Join Maus Haus Gallery for a hands-on workshop on submitting and presenting your artwork for call for entry opportunities.

Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, this workshop will provide you with valuable insights and tips to help your work stand out. Have you thought of submitting artwork for Call for Entries? What is a Call for Entry Exhibition? What are Jurors looking for when I submit a piece? How do I submit the proper file for a Call for Entry? How do I prepare my piece for display at the gallery?

If you have ever asked yourself one of these questions, then this workshop series is for you. This workshop is designed to help you to understand what galleries are looking for when they place a Call for Entry, what not to do, what jurors are looking at when selecting a piece, and how to properly prepare your work for display (if chosen).

This is a three-day series:

  • The first day will go over basic information on what a Call for Entry is, how it can benefit you as an emerging artist, and how to select your work appropriately.
  • The second day will discuss file format criteria, what not to send when submitting your work, hear from a few jurors about what they look for when choosing artwork. Participating as jurors will be Mike Ross, Cheryl Barill, and Anna van Schaap.
  • The third day will discuss why presentation is important, you will bring a piece to prepare for display as if accepted into a show and will wire the piece properly. For 2-D pieces, such as photographs or paintings, a frame will be provided to demonstrate accurate information. We will then have a mockup gallery set up to demonstrate the importance of proper mounting and display and what your piece can look like when on a gallery wall.

You can come to all three days or pick and choose which day is best for your needs.

Book Signing with Rick Bailey & Donald Levin | Thursday, October 17

Book Signing with Rick Bailey & Donald Levin | Thursday, October 17

Color | Ink Studio & Gallery is pleased to host a book signing event featuring Donald Levin with his latest novel, The Ghosts of Detroit, and Rick Bailey with his new novel, Drop and Add, both just published. Join us on Thursday evening, October 17 at 6:30 pm to meet the authors, followed at 7:00 pm by readings and discussion in-person and on Zoom.

Mid-century Detroit is the backdrop for award-winning Ferndale author Donald Levin’s new work, The Ghosts of Detroit (Poison Toe Press, 2024). Set in Detroit in 1955, Levin’s latest historical novel follows four troubled characters in an unsettled time of factory closings, the Red scare, and racial violence.

The third volume in the author’s Detroit Trilogy Series brings this quartet of seekers together on an journey through the hidden history that shaped mid-century America. The Prairies Book Review called the book, “A moving, mesmerizing tale . . . masterfully captures Detroit’s urban landscape, imbuing it with both grit and lyrical beauty.” Levin is also the author of two historical novels, seven novels in the Detroit-based Martin Preuss Mystery Series, and three books of poetry.

Bloomfield Hills-based author Rick Bailey will debut his first novel, Drop and Add (Legacy Project, 2024). The novel tracks newly-minted English Ph.D. Eliot Becker through the struggles of his first year as adjunct instructor at a technical community college in tiny Freeland, Michigan, teaching “the worst class with the worst students at the worst time of day” and supplementing his income bagging groceries and singing in an all-falsetto band at a country bar. Critics have called Drop and Add an entertaining, inventive, and intelligent ode to the pleasures of small-town Michigan life.

Bailey taught writing for 38 years at Henry Ford College in the Detroit area. Besides Drop and Add, he is a prolific essayist, publishing four collections of essays: American English, Italian Chocolate; The Enjoy Agenda; Get Thee to a Bakery; And Now This; and a memoir, Tumbling Up.

The authors will read from their books and sign copies, which will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be available. The event is free and open to the public, with registration required for both in-person and Zoom attendance. Just click on the “Register” button above for more information and to sign up.

Jewelry Making with Michael Opipari | Saturday, October 12

Jewelry Making with Michael Opipari | Saturday, October 12

Description

Try something fun on a Saturday afternoon—making jewelry with Michael Opipari using alternative silver casting processes. Michael will bring his talent, expertise and creativity to demonstrate broom and bean casting.

Silver casting is the process of creating a metal object by pouring molten metal into a mold and allowing it to cool and solidify. Straw-casting silver is a low-tech direct casting method that’s a lot of fun to play with. You soak an old-fashioned straw broom in water for a few hours, then melt and pour molten silver from a crucible into the bunched bristles of the broom. The same technique is used with beans, and can use any shaped bean—kidney, pea, or black bean.

After the molten silver is poured over the bristles or beans, you will then continue the process of creating a necklace for your special someone—or yourself. You will leave with a finished piece of wearable art. If you’ve been interested in jewelry making, especially casting with silver, this is the workshop for you!

About Michael Opipari
After lengthy careers as a freelance photographer and retail designer, Michael Opipari embarked on a new path. Since 2017, his combined experiences have given him a unique perspective on the practical and aesthetic processes of crafting innovative, environmentally sound, and ethically sourced wearable art. Monotypes with Encaustic Workshop | Saturday, July 13

Monotypes with Encaustic Workshop | Saturday, July 13

Description

Welcome to summer! Let’s unwind and create one-of-a-kind prints with hot wax!

This workshop is for artists at every level who want to learn about ways to incorporate encaustic into their artwork, or have worked with encaustic before and want to have a deeper exposure to a specific technique.

What is an encaustic monotype print? It involves using encaustic paint directly on a heated surface, laying paper over the melted paint and burnishing it, thereby making a print. These prints can achieve unexpected results, bringing a spontaneity to your work.

Demonstrations are combined with ample time for independent work, and with one-on-one assistance, giving you a chance to explore some of the materials and tools of this versatile medium.

The agenda for the day will include:

  • An informal gathering at the beginning for art conversation over coffee and pastries talking about monotypes and looking at some examples.
  • A brief review of the encaustic process and safety
  • Demo of the printing process and discussion of papers and tools
  • Possible ways to present these works

The equipment, supplies, and many materials including several different papers will be provided (a packet of a dozen or so papers, approx. 10” x 12”). However, you should also bring in some additional papers with which to work. If you are new to printing, I suggest trying thinner printing papers (like Rives BFK lightweight), or Japanese (washi) papers in light or neutral colors.

This workshop is not offered very often, so grab this opportunity while you can. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $145 until July 5 or $175 for later registrations. At checkout, you will be able to pay securely online with a credit card or PayPal. Payment plans are also available from PayPal.

BIG INK 2024

BIG INK 2024

Event: Saturday & Sunday, May 18 & 19 at 1-4 pm
Relief Print Exhibition: May 10-19, 2024

BIG INK returns to Color | Ink Studio & Gallery on May 18-19 for a colossal woodblock printing event. More than a dozen Michigan artists have each spent the last several months designing and carving a woodblock at least 24” by 36” in size. The participating artists will come together that weekend to print their woodblocks on “The Big Tuna”, a custom-built travelling press.

“We’re thrilled that BIG INK is returning to Hazel Park as one of 10 destinations in their Spring 2024 coast-to-coast tour,” said Eric Law, the organizer of the event. “Watching these woodblocks turn into prints is exciting, and it’s a lot of fun for both the artists and the public.”

A woodblock is essentially a hand-carved stamp. Woodblock prints, aka woodcuts, are made through a process of elimination. First, an artist draws a design onto a piece of wood. Areas to show “white” are cut away with a chisel, leaving the characters or image to show in “black” at the original surface level. The stamp is coated with ink and pressed onto paper by hand. Large woodblocks require a specialized machine press to exert enough force to produce a quality impression.

“The ink will be flying that weekend,” said Candace Law, one of the participants. “The artists who create these images, usually alone in a studio, are going to gather in community as we undertake the physical process of pulling everyone’s finished prints.”

In conjunction with BIG INK’s visit, the Gallery is hosting a week-long special exhibition highlighting the art of relief printmaking by artists in the event. A variety of techniques will be on display in the show, which runs from May 10-19, and prints are available for purchase. Click here to view the exhibition online.

The public is invited to attend the demonstration and exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19 from 1-4 pm each day. It’s free, and visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the process and meet the artists in person. Light refreshments will be available. The Gallery is located at 20919 John R Rd. in Hazel Park and can be reached by email at Gallery@ColorInkStudio.com or by phone at 248-398-6119.

Viv ‘n Vince: A Table Reading of a Play in Two Acts

Details

*** Event has been CANCELLED ***

Join us on Saturday, January 13 from 1-3pm for a table reading of “Viv ‘n Vince”, a play in two acts by Andrew Lark. It is a fictionalized account of the events that led up to the Stonewall Uprising in late 1960’s New York City… with a little “Norma Desmond” influence thrown into the mix.

The Stonewall Uprising was a series of confrontations between police and LGBTQ+ protesters over six days. It would fundamentally change the discourse surrounding LGBTQ+ activism in the US.

Andrew is a Detroit playwright and author. The play is a work in progress, and Andrew, along with several friends, will give a table reading. Audience members (both in person and online) and the performers will be encouraged to engage the playwright with their questions and feedback.

The event is free and open to the public. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. There is ample free parking in the lot and on the sidestreets.

Visitors also will have the opportunity to view “Unified”, a solo exhibition featuring Detroit contemporary artist Keto Green, as Maus Haus Gallery takes over the Studio.

Directions for participating in the program online will be posted here the day before the event.
