Description
Join visual artist Melissa Rian in our studio on Saturday, February 21 from 10 am to 4 pm for a one-day encaustic collagraph workshop. This is your opportunity to learn more about this versatile printmaking technique. Then return on Sunday from 12:30 to 4 pm for an optional half-day of additional studio time to continue making prints.
This workshop is for artists at every level who want to explore encaustic collagraph printmaking and create distinctive prints. You don’t need to be a printmaker to jump in and enjoy this process. What is an encaustic collagraph? Collagraph printmaking is a method of printing that uses a plate with a low textured surface. We create the plates using hot wax, tools and other materials to create patterns and texture on a rigid surface, then use a press to pull a collagraph print. Even if you are new to encaustic or printmaking but would like to experiment with it, you are welcome to join us.
The agenda for the workshop will include:
- An informal gathering at the beginning for art conversation over coffee and pastries, talking about collagraphs and looking at some examples.
- A review of the basic process using wax, tools, and materials like carborundum
- Pulling prints with multiple plates and colors
- Using different papers for printing and chine collé
Demonstrations are combined with ample time for independent work, with one-on-one assistance, giving you a chance to explore some of the materials and tools of this creative medium. The equipment, supplies, and many materials needed for the workshop are provided. You may bring any of your own tools or texture materials to create your plate’s surface, as well as some extra printmaking papers, like Rives BFK or Stonehenge.
Space is limited, so you won’t want to miss out—the cost is just $175 for the Saturday-only workshop or $260 if you want additional studio time on Sunday. And be sure to register by February 6 to get these early-bird prices.
