Description

Let’s get ready for Spring by loosening up and trying something new — think encaustic and stencils!! Join visual artist Candace Law for a creative day learning more about this lovely, versatile medium.

When many people think of painting with stencils, they think of graffiti artists like Banksy. But more studio artists use this technique than you might realize, for example Keith Haring and Basquiat. Stencils can be simple, decorative, geometric, organic, create an interesting background or provide a focal point. They encourage creativity and are just plain fun to use.

To open the class we will review the basics of working with encaustic, so beginners are welcome.

Next we will talk about stencils and masks, their differences, and how to effectively use them with hot wax. There will be a variety of heat-tolerant stencils provided to work with, but if you have any favorite ones, bring them along. As always, there will be demos, one-on-one time with the instructor, as well as ample time for individual work.

All equipment, paints and tools will be supplied by the instructor. Wood panels will be provided for painting; a selection of stencils and a few other fun supplies will be also available to experiment with.

Students are welcome to bring personal items to include in their art, such as absorbent papers or other ephemera to enhance and make their work more personal.

BE SURE to wear studio clothes with long sleeves and bring a bag lunch or snack for a midday break.
