Description

Try something fun on a Saturday afternoon—making jewelry with Michael Opipari using alternative silver casting processes. Michael will bring his talent, expertise and creativity to demonstrate broom and bean casting.

Silver casting is the process of creating a metal object by pouring molten metal into a mold and allowing it to cool and solidify. Straw-casting silver is a low-tech direct casting method that’s a lot of fun to play with. You soak an old-fashioned straw broom in water for a few hours, then melt and pour molten silver from a crucible into the bunched bristles of the broom. The same technique is used with beans, and can use any shaped bean—kidney, pea, or black bean.

After the molten silver is poured over the bristles or beans, you will then continue the process of creating a necklace for your special someone—or yourself. You will leave with a finished piece of wearable art. If you’ve been interested in jewelry making, especially casting with silver, this is the workshop for you!
