Description

Join visual artist Candace Law at the Grosse Pointe Artists Association Studio on Saturday, October 12 from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm for a day of learning to create art with encaustic.

Whether you are new to encaustic or you’ve used hot wax before, this workshop is a great opportunity to learn from and work with one of Detroit’s best-known encaustic artists.

An opening review and warm-up exercise will bring everyone up to speed before the class begins to explore the many textures and surfaces you can create with hot wax.

Be ready to be intrigued.

Some of the things we will cover in this workshop:

  • Basics of encaustic: process, materials and supplies
  • How to work safely
  • Physical vs. visual texture
  • Warm up by priming, painting and fusing a small panel, then on to a medium-sized panel
  • Creating texture with paint (accretion), tools and other materials
  • Demos, one-on-one with instructor and plenty of individual work time

All equipment, paints, brushes and panels are provided. You do not need to bring anything except an apron and a willingness to experiment!

To make your work more personal, feel free to bring small items, such as decorative papers, found objects and other ephemera. Reference photos can be helpful.

The cost is just $90 for GPAA members and $110 for non-GPAA members. Space is limited, so don’t wait—sign up today!
